First Renewable Energy Community in St. Anton am Arlberg

From an Idea to Becoming an REC

The Founding of Our Quality Host Arlberg Renewable Energy Community:

The decision to establish a Renewable Energy Community (REC) was driven by the necessity of a sustainable energy future. Moreover, this project reflects the principles and actions of Quality Host Arlberg (QHA). As chairman, I initiated this project with substantial support from fellow members and experts. Our aim is to make our businesses even more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. However, the journey was not easy – it was marked by challenges that we had to overcome. We were the first REC in St. Anton am Arlberg.

Why a Renewable Energy Community?

There are multiple reasons for establishing an REC:

  • Energy Autonomy: Full energy self-sufficiency is not feasible for us due to various reasons. However, we are now able to use our self-generated electricity within our community.
  • Sustainability: Contributing to climate protection through renewable energy sources. Raising awareness of the issue and playing our part.
  • Community: Strengthening regional cohesion. Providing new opportunities to utilise surplus electricity from private photovoltaic (PV) systems.
  • Economic Benefits: Lower electricity prices for REC members, compensation for energy peaks, and advantages in purchasing and using energy storage systems.

Challenges as Chairman

  • Finding Supporters: This was not difficult for us, as it aligns with QHA’s core values and promotes the path to sustainable tourism. However, exchanging information and engaging in personal discussions was crucial.
  • Bureaucracy: The legal and administrative requirements demanded a great deal of effort and professional assistance in certain areas.
  • Technical Implementation: A software system for data processing and billing is essential for the REC. The remaining technical aspects were handled by our regional electricity provider, EWA.

Pioneering Work in the Region

As the first REC in the area, we faced unique challenges but also significant opportunities. Interest among our members grew as the initial steps of the project were realised. We have already achieved a great deal, but we are certainly not at the end of our journey. Our REC is not only transforming the energy supply for our businesses but is also strengthening the social and economic bonds within the QHA group.

Conclusion

Establishing an REC is a rewarding yet challenging endeavour. It has become clear that a strong community and the willingness to embrace change can achieve great things. As chairman, I look back with satisfaction on what we have accomplished together so far – and I look forward to what lies ahead. I also want to encourage others to take similar steps. Of course, we are always happy to welcome new members to our QHA REC who wish to embark on this journey with us.
